Today’s winter tires rival the best touring or passenger tires in terms of road noise, handling and ride quality. But are they worth it?

If you live in an area that gets a lot of snow, the answer is a resounding “yes.”

For many drivers, all-season tires make good sense. They’re quiet, they handle well and have a forgiving ride. Unfortunately they’re a tradeoff as well – jack-of-all-trades and master of none. For most vehicles, two inches of snow is too much for all-season tires to still deliver traction.

Winter tires, on the other hand, are designed with a rubber formulation that stays flexible in low temperatures for enhanced traction. Their tread pattern is more aggressive and deeper, designed for snow and slush, and they can effectively evacuate water and slush from the tire’s contact patch to avoid hydroplaning. Winter tires also feature a dense network of sipes, tiny slits in the tread surface that act as thousands of extra edges to bite into soft snow for traction.

After an ice storm, it’s best to just stay home if possible since no tire performs well on ice. If you have to get out, though, winter tires give you a fighting chance on the slick stuff. Many winter tires come pre-drilled for studs, allowing a dealer to easily hammer metal studs into the tread for extra traction on ice. NOTE: Always remember to check your local laws in regards to studded tires. Some states don’t allow them, and if they do, only within a certain time period on the calendar.

There’s one important thing to remember about your winter tires. Once temps rise above 40 degrees or so, remember to change them for all-season tires again. The soft rubber compound of winter tires wears very quickly in warmer weather.

Are you ready for winter? Make an appointment with Allen Tire & Service – we’ve got a set of winter tires that are perfect for your vehicle and your budget!
/blog/view/winter-tires-overrated/feed1Why Are Oil Changes So Important?http://allenrubber.com/blog/view/why-are-oil-changes-so-importanthttp://allenrubber.com/blog/view/why-are-oil-changes-so-important#commentsSun, 28 Aug 2016 07:00:00 -0600TCShttp://allenrubber.com/blog/view/why-are-oil-changes-so-important
Your dad probably told you years ago – “make sure your oil gets changed every 3,000 miles!”

He was right. Regular oil changes are still the best way to get maximum engine protection and get the most miles out of your vehicle. The “3,000 mile rule” has fallen by the wayside, though, as newer formulations of motor oil contain friction modifiers, detergents and other agents that can stretch that number to 5,000 miles.

Your engine’s moving parts operate on very close tolerances with each other. Without a protective film of motor oil, the engine would quickly overheat to a point where these parts actually weld to each other and seize the engine. The combustion process, however, generates a lot of carbon and acids which make their way into the oil, along with microscopic metal shavings. These particles are suspended in the oil and are trapped by the oil filter until the filter’s paper element becomes saturated. At that point, deposits of sludge and carbon will start to accumulate on internal engine assemblies, resulting in faster wear and a shortened engine life.

Conventional motor oil is pretty inexpensive and can easily go 5,000 miles between oil changes. Manufacturers now recommend synthetic oil for all new vehicles, and for good reason. Synthetic oil outperforms conventional oil in about every respect, including the fact that it doesn’t tend to thin out at high temperatures or thicken in cold weather. While synthetic oil is quite a bit more expensive per quart, the extra cost is offset by a 10-12,000 mile oil change interval (always check manufacturer’s recommendations).

Can’t remember the last time you got an oil change? Pull your engine’s oil dipstick. The oil should be translucent and the color of honey. Oil that’s a bit darker but still translucent should have a few thousand miles to go before a change. Oil that’s the color of black coffee and has an acrid smell should be changed right away. That is, if you want to get the most miles out of your car’s engine!

What’s your odometer reading say? Is it time for an oil change again? Make an appointment with us at Allen Tire & Service in Philadelphia, PA!
/blog/view/why-are-oil-changes-so-important/feed0A Brief Glossary of Auto Repair Terms http://allenrubber.com/blog/view/a-brief-glossary-of-auto-repair-termshttp://allenrubber.com/blog/view/a-brief-glossary-of-auto-repair-terms#commentsSun, 31 Jul 2016 16:22:13 -0600TCShttp://allenrubber.com/blog/view/a-brief-glossary-of-auto-repair-terms
When technicians or service advisors start using jargon-heavy automotive terminology, it can get confusing pretty quickly. At Allen Rubber in Philadelphia, PA, we try to be as direct and clear as possible with our customers, so here's a brief rundown of terms you might hear:

Air filter: It's important to keep pollen, dust and other tiny particles from entering your engine's fuel system. The air filter traps these small bits before they can make their way in, using a pleated-paper or fabric medium (sometimes saturated with a special oil).

A/C Compressor: Like your refrigerator at home, your car's air conditioner relies on a cycle of evaporation and condensation of a gas refrigerant to provide cooling. The refrigerant is turned back into a liquid again when it passes through the compressor, a pump (driven by the engine) that puts the refrigerant under pressure. The compressor is the heart of your A/C system.

Belt: Your vehicle's air conditioning compressor, power steering pump, water pump, alternator and other accessories are all powered by a rubber belt that's driven by the engine's crankshaft. Older vehicles had separate belts for each accessory, but from the 90s on engines have used a continuous "serpentine belt" that's routed to pulleys on all accessories. This lowers parasitic drag on the engine and saves space under the hood, since older systems had to have all the pulleys offset from each other to make room for the belts.

Diagnostics: Since the early 90s, engines have been designed with a processor that controls fuel metering, transmission shift points, power, emissions and other drivability factors. The processor takes information from sensors around the engine and transmission; when a sensor is sending information that is outside of norms, it registers a trouble code in the processor, illuminating the Check Engine lamp. From there, a technician can connect a scanner/code reader to the processor's diagnostic port and quickly access the information which will point him to the problem.

PCM: Related to engine diagnostics, the PCM is your engine's Powertrain Control Module. It's the processor that controls the engine functions mentioned above and stores trouble codes if needed. The PCM is the brains of your vehicle's electronics.

Sludge: If left too long without being changed, motor oil starts to collect acids, water vapor, carbon and grit from the combustion process. These contaminants can form accumulations of sludge on bearings and other internal moving parts, shortening engine life.

Wheel alignment: These are the angles of the front wheels that affect your car's handling and steering response. The angles are toe-in, an inward skew of a wheel as seen from above; toe-out, an outward skew of the wheel as seen from above; camber, the wheel's inward or outward tilt as seen from the front; and caster, the fore-and-aft positioning of the wheel.

Don't go into an auto repair shop uninformed...it's good to at least have some familiarity of what's being discussed when there's a problem with your car. And if you're noticing any issues with your own vehicle, we hope you'll make an appointment with us at Allen Rubber in Philadelphia, PA!
/blog/view/a-brief-glossary-of-auto-repair-terms/feed0Allen/Trio Tire and Auto Give Backhttp://allenrubber.com/blog/view/allen-trio-tire-and-auto-give-backhttp://allenrubber.com/blog/view/allen-trio-tire-and-auto-give-back#commentsSat, 09 Nov 2013 13:22:25 -0700TCShttp://allenrubber.com/blog/view/allen-trio-tire-and-auto-give-back
On November 9th 2013, Allen/Trio Tire and Auto contributed to the 16th annual “Every Family Party”, a family-friendly event who donates to Public Programs. Maximizing your fuel efficiency will not only save you money, it is better for your vehicle and the environment! With some proper maintenance, and simple tips and tricks, you can make fewer trips to the pump, which will be friendlier on your car, and your wallet.

Tires - The right tires for your driving conditions are important. For the best gas mileage choose low rolling resistance tires. These are designed to maximize fuel efficiency and performance by increasing the tire’s grip on the road. Tires for racing and oversized off-roading tires are designed only for specific uses, and shouldn’t be used as your vehicle’s primary tires.

Tire Inflation- Proper tire inflation for driving conditions will promote a smoother, more efficient ride. Tire inflation should be watched more in temperature extremes, and should be checked only when the tires are cool and have not been driven on recently.

Wheel Balance- If your wheels aren’t balanced, they can wear unevenly or even bounce, preventing full contact with the road, diminishing fuel efficiency. For the best gas mileage, have your wheels balanced with every rotation.

Proper Alignment – A vehicle with proper alignment will have less pull due to tires not working together with the driveline, and should use less gas. Proper alignment can also help save your tires, and decrease engine drag by creating less resistance, boosting your vehicle’s performance.

Oil changes – Proper and frequent oil changes can be one of the best ways to maximize your gas mileage. Your vehicle will run smoother and cleaner, using less fuel. Make sure you are checking with your owner’s manual for exact specifications and using the recommended oil weight.

Air filter – Air filters can be visually checked and changed when dirty, or checked with every oil change. If you live in an area with smog or pollution, or drive on dusty roads or through frequent road construction, you may need to check and change your air filter more often. Without clean, cool air mixing with the fuel to create combustion, your vehicle consumes more gas, and therefore lowers your vehicle’s efficiency.

Maintenance - Maintaining you vehicle will improve its overall health, with the added bonus of better gas mileage. Regular tune-ups will replace spark plugs, checks for leaks in hoses, and tighten any belts. On your own, you can maintain your fuel filter, fuel pump, and gas cap, and watch for leaks or cracks. This is not only a fuel waster, but can be a safety hazard.

Driving Habits- Stop and go traffic for city dwellers happens, which will lower your fuel efficiency. But many driving habits that can suck up extra fuel can be avoided- like jackrabbit starts, hitting the gas pedal as soon as a light turns green, rather than easing into it. Excessive speeds and freeway driving can also lower gas mileage due to the constant acceleration.

Use the Right Gas - Unless your vehicle requires premium gasoline, most vehicles do just fine on regular unleaded gas. In fact, premium gas can burn less efficiently, actually reducing your gas mileage and wasting gas. Not only do you spend more at the pump, you’ll be fueling up more often.

Air Conditioning- It’s not a myth that driving with the air conditioner on can reduce gas mileage significantly. In the hotter months, it is nearly unavoidable. But, when possible, driving with the windows down or taking shorter trips will help you and your wallet in the long run.

/blog/view/10-ways-to-get-better-gas-mileage/feed0Allen Trio Tire and Service Offers New 2013 Couponshttp://allenrubber.com/blog/view/allen-trio-tire-and-service-offers-new-2012-couponshttp://allenrubber.com/blog/view/allen-trio-tire-and-service-offers-new-2012-coupons#commentsMon, 19 Nov 2012 14:08:56 -0700TCShttp://allenrubber.com/blog/view/allen-trio-tire-and-service-offers-new-2012-coupons
Since 1932 Allen Trio Tire and Service has offered top of the line automotive care, affordable pricing, all with the trust and quality of their legendary customer service.
